Crow Dog's Cremation

Following up on the last post, tonight there was a cremation ceremony held for Crow Dog. Below are some photos I took. The first one shows Crow Dog wrapped in his death shroud, the others follow as the flames consume him.

Now he is released,
now he flies again,
free of form.

Now that's a sendoff.

How do you know it was a he?

Crow Dog. Quothe the Raven,
Nevermore!

I don't know he was a he, but that's what Crow Dog SEEMED like to me. But now that I think about it, I realize that all crows seem like males to me... magpies too... such macho birds!

The cremation was quite an event... the fire was burning so hot and big that I started worrying about the flames shooting out and setting the roof on fire... so I closed the dampers a little, to slow the fire down. A few minutes later I realized the house was filling with smoke. So, I have presumably inhaled Crow Dog's essence now.

And, just to top it off, when I went to remove the fireplace screen, to take the last photo as the fire died down, I burned three fingers on my left hand. That fits, as the first sentence of some info I found on Crow Medicine was: "Crow is the left-handed guardian." It also said: "Do not try to figure Crow out. It is the power of the unknown at work, and something special is about to happen."
